Drop time without Volt typically ranges from 2.5 to 3 seconds for most operators; some worked successfully with 5 to 6 seconds before Volt was available, and individual preference varies—longer drop time often helps beginners.
Guidance uses primarily the index finger and thumb just below the gimbal, with primary force transmitted through the post; minimal contact with the sled itself improves stability, as a well-balanced rig naturally seeks horizontal.
The operator must anticipate and correct for sled inertia without electronic assistance; when a movement ends abruptly, the hand moves to the opposite gimbal side to absorb momentum.
Build geometry matters: minimal weight at the top, deep, narrow and long configurations prove most stable; smaller sleds have less inertia and are more susceptible to wind.
Horizon reference aids include a line on the monitor or a bubble level; however, monitor lines alone are insufficient as true horizons often absent from the frame and vertical references collapse when tilting.
Operator posture functions as a human tripod: the vest must distribute load evenly, spine upright, shoulders relaxed, hips centered; free-hand practice without manual correction of the sled demonstrates whether the rig hangs stably on the body alone, after which the hands provide fine control.
