A monitor without an SDI socket cannot be fed by an SDI sled without a converter.
  • A recording monitor is not automatically a good rig monitor. One operator reports using a well-known 7-inch recording monitor for nine months and calling it unsuitable for stabilizer work, with two burn-outs even after repair. Another uses the same model by choice, purely for its recording ability. The disagreement is real and worth knowing before buying.
  • The trade-off behind that disagreement is weight and heat against function. A monitor that records has to dissipate more heat and weighs more, and on a sled both cost balance and battery.
  • Wireless video has moved on to fibre and bidirectional 12G links, so a rig built around older analogue or single-direction wireless will look increasingly odd next to current camera departments.
  • 🔴 Service has become the deciding factor. Transvideo, whose monitors are among the most widely used on stabilizer rigs, is reported as out of business, and owners are searching publicly for anyone who can repair a screen. When buying a used monitor, ask who can still service it before asking what it costs.
  • A monitor can be too light. Operators report adding batteries to a lightweight monitor purely for mass, because on a sled the monitor is part of the balance and a very light one gives too little to balance against. This is the opposite of the usual instinct to save weight.
  • Experiences with the same monitor diverge sharply. One operator reports repeated power problems with a popular compact model and advises against it; another flies the same model happily and only adds weight to it. Before buying on a recommendation, ask what it was flown on and for how long.
  • The record trigger survives the whole chain. Operators confirm it passes down the centre post, through a monitor and even across an SDI to HDMI conversion, so a recorder does not have to sit at the bottom stage to be triggered from the camera. One reports looping out of the monitor and up the post to a recorder for years without trouble. That frees the recorder's position to be chosen for balance rather than for signal.

  • Operator reports from 2026. The judgement on the recording monitor is one person's experience against another's, not a test.
  • The troubleshooting steps cover the common case. They do not replace checking cables, power and the camera output itself.
  • The service situation is a snapshot and may change if a successor takes over repairs.
