Selecting and integrating Steadicam components to build a modular rig for EFP and video work
20 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A four-stage post provides better rigidity and dynamic performance than alternatives for this operator's needs.
- The XCS gimbal was chosen over the MK-V gimbal based on hands-on feel during back-to-back comparison flying, despite both options requiring specific post sizes.
- The Nexus electronic system's modular configuration allows flexible battery positioning and power distribution to maintain dynamic balance across different camera weights.
- Transvideo's Ultra-Bright monitor was retained after side-by-side comparison with the Hummingbird and CineMonitor 3, finding the performance gains did not justify the added bulk.
- Dionics batteries achieved 12-hour runtime per battery change and performed consistently across temperature extremes in field use.
- A four-stage post setup allowed conversion from high mode to low mode in approximately four minutes, with super-low mode achievable in one additional minute.
- The Chroiziel topstage was compatible with multiple dovetail systems after minor modification with safety screws.
Depends on
- Selection process based on individual preferences and specific use cases; preferences may not transfer to other operators.
- Experience limited to one operator's 8-month evaluation period in 2006.
- Temperature extremes mentioned were not specified; battery performance generalization may be limited to those conditions.
- Modifications required to make Chroiziel topstage compatible with non-Chroiziel dovetails; standard Chroiziel topstage may differ.
