Rigging a RED Komodo 6K on a CAME-TV Steadicam® sled for improved inertia and operator technique.

What the thread found

  • Tighten the camera setup by eliminating mass above the carrying handle; one operator reports removing an onboard monitor from the top of the camera reduced unwanted dynamic response.
  • Mass positioned above the gimbal can increase inertia, similar to 'antlers,' but an onboard monitor mounted on an articulating arm acts as a sail, creates wind resistance, and becomes unbalanced through cable weight.
  • Longer sled geometry and gimbal positioning relative to the camera axis achieve greater effective inertia more effectively than top-mounted accessories.
  • One operator modified a CAME-TV sled by replacing lower tubes with carbon fiber, drilling a monitor bracket for better positioning, shortening HDMI and SDI cables, installing a hardwired power distribution with SDI output, and adding a Y-bracket for an 8-inch monitor; this operator recommended eventually upgrading to a different arm because the original sheaves work poorly under spring tension.
  • For narrative film and drama, practice slow, precise movements; rapid moves are better suited to music video work.
  • Operator posture: maintain a straight back when lowering the rig—descend by bending the knees, widening stance, or ducking under the arm boom, never by flexing the spine.

Depends on

  • Optimal sled length and gimbal distance depend on camera weight and desired movement characteristics.
  • Whether shorter or longer sled geometry suits light cameras remains contested among operators.
  • Monitor placement strategy depends on wind conditions and desired rig responsiveness.
