Adding counterweight to a Master Series Steadicam when practicing with lightweight cameras

14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • A weight plate accessory designed for this purpose is available and recommended over homemade solutions due to superior functionality and appearance on professional sets.
  • Temporary weight can be added using free-weights with small holes, a large washer with appropriate threading, and a long screw, stacked on the dovetail above the camera, though this is considered a temporary practice solution.
  • Proper weight plates have tapped and countersunk holes throughout and threaded corner holes for rod attachment, enabling multiple configurations for different camera weights.
  • Weight plates can be screwed together and used as a plate solution rather than a full cage structure if needed.
  • Having proper counterweight equipment on set conveys professionalism, whereas improvised weights can appear amateur.
  • Homemade solutions from machine shops typically cost significantly more than purpose-made alternatives once precision drilling and tapping are factored in.

Depends on

  • Temporary DIY weight solutions are intended for practice only, not professional work.
  • Homemade counterweights should be dimensioned carefully to accommodate the largest cameras you anticipate using, as undersized solutions cannot be easily repurposed.
  • The temporary free-weight method described was estimated at approximately thirty dollars but is not suitable as a permanent substitute.
  • The discussion does not address whether stacking two weight plates directly on top of each other is structurally sound or recommended.
