History of wireless focus and lens control systems for Steadicam®: from cable-based Cinema Products and Seitz to Preston digital, and European solutions by Chrosziel, cmotion, and ARRI.

What the thread found

  • Early wired focus control used Cinema Products and Panavision systems for Panaglide; the first wireless systems were Cinema Products WRC-3 and WRC-4, adapted from hobby radio control equipment (Futaba, later Airtronics), typically with a second channel for iris control.
  • The Seitz 8700 employed similar radio technology to the WRC series but featured superior electronics and was considered the higher-end option.
  • WRC-3 and WRC-4 suffered from poor shielding between potentiometers and housing, causing cable movement to shift motor positions; retrofitting PID control to the motor driver improved accuracy and eventually fed into the analog BFD control electronics.
  • Preston shifted the market first with 24 V crane systems on 350 MHz, then with 2.4 GHz ISM-band equipment at 12/24 V using digital position transmission, establishing itself as premium while BFD served as the budget alternative, later upgraded to digital.
  • European manufacturers including Chrosziel (MagFox, DigiFox, Magnum), cmotion, ARRI Wireless Lens Control, Scorpio, and Benz developed competing wireless systems; ARRI initially faced range, cost, and generational compatibility issues but is now regarded as top-tier by many operators.
  • Specialist receivers were sometimes mechanically identical to affordable hobby radio control components, allowing repair at a fraction of manufacturer prices.
  • One operator noted that archiving old systems, manuals, and sales literature preserves industry history for future reference.
