Rebalancing stabilizer rigs when changing prime lenses during shooting
16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Rebalance the rig every time a lens is changed, even though it only takes a few seconds
- Static balance should be checked while wearing the rig, which takes approximately thirty seconds
- If you achieve both static and dynamic balance with one lens and then rebalance after changing the lens, you will maintain dynamic balance after the camera swap
- Adjusting batteries or monitors to rebalance will throw off dynamic balance instead of restoring it
- Attempting to shoot without proper rebalancing results in visible operator influence on the shot and reduces the quality of movement in the final footage
Depends on
- Specific lens weights mentioned anecdotally but not quantified
- Advice based on stabilizer rigs used in 2010, camera systems and accessories may differ now
- The claim about battery adjustment throwing off dynamic balance was not expanded upon or tested in the thread
