Camera mounting techniques for self-filmed walking documentary with stabilization rig
19 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Mounting the camera at an angle rather than in line with the stabilization sled can produce more flattering angles of the operator's face while maintaining proper sled operation
- An off-axis camera mount allows the operator to reference the external monitor while the sled itself is aimed straight ahead
- Experimental mounting trials are needed to find the optimal angle that keeps the operator in frame while walking
- 360-degree camera systems using a reflective sphere and computer processing can capture omnidirectional views but exhibit visible distortion with any tilting or rolling motion
- Wide-angle or fisheye lenses on a secondary camera mounted to the rig or operator's vest can eliminate the need for whip pans between locations
Depends on
- The external LCD monitor may be obscured by the lens in standard configurations
- 360-degree systems show the operator in the image as well as the surroundings
- 360-degree systems reveal horizon distortion as visible wave patterns when the rig tilts or rolls
- No final footage from this project was produced at the time of the discussion
