Preston DM-1X motor specifications and practical differences compared to DM-1 and DM-2
18 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The DM-1X measures 117x54x31mm, positioned between the DM-1 (122x75x33mm) and DM-2 (100x50x28mm) in size.
- The DM-1X rotates at 4 revolutions per second, making it faster than the DM-1.
- The DM-1X delivers approximately twice the power output of the DM-1 motor.
- The DM-1X achieves focus speed comparable to the DM-2 iris calibration speed on Cooke S-4 lenses.
- Despite specifications listing 290 grams for the DM-2 and 415 grams for the DM-1, the DM-1X feels lighter in hand than expected.
- The DM-2 rosetta attachment is too short to fit the DM-1X, while the DM-1 rosetta is too long by approximately 2mm on each side.
- The DM-1X lemo connector keyway faces upward toward the gear, which may cause cable length issues with Arricam LT cameras when using right-angle motor cables mounted from the top.
- The DM-1X output gear spins freely, unlike earlier models where the gear was fixed and required significant force to move.
- The DM-1X costs $3250 plus $62 for the larger output gear, compared to $2885 for the DM-1 and DM-2.
Depends on
- Rosetta compatibility issue was noted as being addressed but not yet resolved at time of writing.
- Observation about DM-1X feeling lighter than specifications suggest is subjective and may not reflect actual weight difference.
- Cable length issue is specific to right-angle motor cable setups on Arricam LT with top-mounted motors.
- Discussion occurred in 2008 and reflects motor specifications and pricing from that period.
