Achieving lowmode lens height on a 43 lb Sony Venice Panavision Rialto rig without antlers, using inverted body placement.

What the thread found

  • The Venice brain unit can be mounted inverted at the sled base using an SOS plate with two screws on the M-1 base, placing the weight below instead of above and allowing the lens to reach floor level without antlers.
  • Cable routing between head and body must be kept taut in this inverted configuration.
  • This inversion enables running and booming up to the armend under low ceilings, whereas antlers raise the rig above 6 feet and add roughly 7 lb, yet still do not close the gimbal-to-lens distance sufficiently.
  • Using a Volt provides measurable improvement in such extreme configurations.
  • Rental rig weight drivers include top and bottom plates, dovetail for BP8/BP9 or Cheeseplate, hotswap battery plate, and Rialto cage—totaling approximately 6–7 lb of metal; the Rialto offers limited power outputs, requiring additional distribution and cabling.
  • A Sony Venice with Cooke anamorphic lenses is typically rated at approximately 25 lb and works well on Omega or Trinity rigs; lighter sleds such as MK-V Nexus with 24 V and additional battery can also achieve floor height according to operator experience.
  • Actual weight should be verified by scale (e.g., luggage scale) when in doubt.

Depends on

  • Whether the heavy Panavision configuration was necessary or whether a lighter sled would have solved the problem more simply remains unresolved.
