Bartech follow focus receiver antenna orientation and RF signal interference on Steadicam

20 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The follow focus assistant should maintain close proximity to the camera operator and actors to keep the subject in focus and monitor the action, rather than walking far behind the rig.
  • RF interference problems can often be resolved by ensuring the Modulus unit is not positioned too close to the BFD, keeping tape tubes above the mattebox, and using Modulus channels 30 or higher.
  • Follow focus receiver antenna direction may not significantly impact RF signal quality, but mounting the receiver on the back of the top stage can improve monitor visibility and battery placement.
  • RF receivers should be tested in isolation from other RF devices to accurately assess signal range; weak range indicated by a red light at close distance may indicate the receiver needs professional servicing.

Depends on

  • No clear consensus reached on whether receiver antenna direction affects signal quality in different orientations.
  • Solutions provided are based on general best practices rather than systematic testing of antenna orientation.
  • Specific environmental conditions causing interference were not detailed beyond mention of certain locations having high interference levels.
