Ultra series telescoping post sections shifting and losing alignment due to locking clamp issues
12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The lower sections of Ultra series telescoping posts can shift slightly during use, causing the yellow center alignment line to misalign
- Tightening the set screws that hold the locking tabs in place may help reduce post shifting
- Each clamp contains two set screws accessible with an Allen wrench that can be tightened against the metal strikeplate, but over-tightening risks breaking components
- Additional small screws that hold the striker plate are located on the inside of the clamp body and can be accessed by pulling the posts apart and moving or removing the polycarbonate brake lining
- Worn set screws can be replaced with new ones from general suppliers, and testing by swapping screws between working and problematic clamps can help identify if the screws are the cause
- The brake pad lining inside the post may contribute to clamping problems
- Ultra 2 model clamps are reported to lock more securely than the original Ultra 1 clamps
- Upgrading to newer-style clamps is possible but expensive and may require replacing the entire post assembly
Depends on
- The discussion involves an older 2014 equipment model
- Exact pricing for upgrades and availability of replacement parts was not specified in detail
- The reliability of upgrading clamps versus replacing full posts was not conclusively determined
- Claims about part sourcing and replacement difficulty are based on incomplete recollection
