Choosing a vest: the one purchase that cannot be made from specifications

DisputedParticipants disagreed and reached no conclusion. Read the findings as positions, not as an answer.

What the thread found

  • Every discussion about which vest to buy ends in the same advice: try it on. Operators with twenty years on one vest, and operators who have owned four or five, both say the same thing, and neither argues from figures. The vest is the only part of a rig whose fit is personal.
  • That makes the practical problem a social one. The question asked in the field is not which vest is best but who nearby owns one to try. Operators routinely invite each other over to test a vest, and someone considering a change will travel for it.
  • The candidates that recur are the front-mounted vests of the main manufacturers, a carbon exoskeleton-style vest, and back-mounted designs. Operators who switched to a back-mounted vest describe it as a different category rather than an improvement, so it belongs on the list to try rather than at the end of a ranking.
  • Preference does not follow price or newness. One operator who had owned three vests from the leading maker plus two others settled on a vest from a smaller manufacturer; another names an older model as his second favourite of all.
  • Body shape and the work decide more than the badge. A vest that suits long days in a studio is not automatically the one for stairs and vehicles, and torso length matters more than most specification sheets admit.
  • For a used purchase this is the one item where buying unseen is a genuine risk, and where the ability to try before paying is worth more than a discount.

Depends on

  • Operator opinion, not measurement. No fitting standard, weight distribution figure or comfort metric was cited by anyone - because none is in common use.
  • Individual anatomy dominates. Any recommendation here describes what suited one person.
  • Back-mounted and front-mounted vests differ in more than comfort, including how the rig is docked and how the operator gets in and out. Those differences were not covered in the discussions.
