Electromagnetic interference between Preston MDR and RedByte Decimator devices on camera rig

15 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • Mounting a Preston MDR and Decimator II in close proximity on a camera sled can cause electromagnetic interference affecting HD video signal quality
  • Focus motor operation and iris adjustments trigger signal dropouts when devices are mounted together
  • Powering the MDR and Decimator from the same circuit increases interference
  • Separating the power sources so each device draws from independent power supplies reduces interference significantly
  • Relocating the Decimator to a different position such as the top of the camera body can eliminate interference problems

Depends on

  • The solution was implemented on a specific RED camera rig configuration
  • Minimal interference persisted even after changing power sources, indicating potential remaining coupling issues
  • The underlying cause of interference may involve both power supply coupling and electromagnetic radiation from focus motor cables
