What the thread found

In support forums, images can be embedded using IMG code, which requires the image to be hosted on an external server that permits linking to the forum site.
In other forums on the same platform, a file upload box appears below the message composition area, allowing users to upload images directly from their local drive to the server.

Depends on

This information is from 2004 and specific to a particular forum platform; modern platforms may have different image posting capabilities.
The technical details about external server permissions and IMG code syntax are not fully elaborated in the discussion.
