Frameline and bubble display disappeared from monitor - diagnosis and repair
21 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A supercapacitor (not a battery) stores charge to maintain CMOS counter settings when power is removed from the equipment.
- Frameline and bubble controls that only work in one direction indicate a faulty encoder or wiring failure between the encoder and circuit board.
- Replacing a failed encoder resolved the issue of unidirectional control.
- Encoders are sensitive components that can be damaged by sawdust, so cutting the shaft should be avoided or done with extreme care using a rotary tool rather than a hacksaw.
Depends on
- The troubleshooting applies to a specific monitor model from around 2005.
- Cutting an encoder shaft is not recommended unless the part is hermetically sealed.
- The supercapacitor identification required desoldering to inspect the part number.
