Setting up a monitor and power system for a Flycam 6000 steadicam rig

18 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • Monitor size between 5 and 7 inches diagonal works well for steadicam use.
  • Outdoor monitors should have high brightness measured in nits and anti-reflective coating, while pixel count matters less for steadicam work.
  • Video connection to the camera typically uses composite video with yellow RCA connectors or BNC connectors.
  • A 12-volt power source is required to operate the monitor.
  • Used LCD TV monitors from online marketplaces can be adapted for steadicam use if they have audio-video inputs and 12-volt power input.
  • Ten AA rechargeable batteries in a battery holder can be assembled as a budget 12-volt power pack and secured with gaff tape to the sled.
  • A hood made from plastic, cardboard, or coroplast improves monitor visibility in outdoor conditions.
  • The cable routing holes at the top and bottom of the sled post allow for clean cable management during gimbal balancing.
  • Placing the monitor lower on the rig and routing thin cables through sled holes improves dynamic balance without obstruction.
  • Holding the sled post close to the body with the battery positioned behind the leg reduces back strain compared to holding the rig extended outward.
  • Moving the gimbal higher up the sled post closer to the stage bottom reduces visible movement at the lens.
  • Extending the bottom rods as far as possible improves pan inertia and smoothness.

Depends on

  • Budget battery solutions use consumer-grade components and may require custom cable fabrication with electrical tape.
  • Budget monitor hoods are DIY constructions and their effectiveness depends on material choice and construction quality.
  • The advice applies to the Flycam 6000 and similar budget steadicam models; professional steadicam systems may have different requirements.
  • Monitor outdoor performance with budget equipment is limited without proper light-blocking hood construction.
  • The sticker on the sled post may need removal with solvents to access the full post for gimbal adjustment.
