Converting Master Series Steadicam battery mount from proprietary to V-lock standard

16 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The Master Series battery adapter can be replaced with a V-mount or AB adapter, which may require drilling four mounting holes
  • Wiring for battery adapter conversion is straightforward: red wire connects to positive and black wire connects to negative
  • One approach involves removing the mounting plate from an existing Master battery and physically joining it to a V-lock plate with appropriate wire connections
  • A dovetail plate from the manufacturer can be attached to a V-lock plate and mounted to the front dovetail on the lower housing, using power connection points located above
  • Placing a V-lock battery on the monitor itself and powering the monitor from that source is an alternative to converting the rig mount
  • Using both Master and V-lock batteries simultaneously on the rig allows flexibility when working with rented camera equipment
  • Powering the camera from steadicam batteries while removing the onboard camera battery improves balance of the rig

Depends on

  • Converting a battery requires sacrificing one Master battery if using the plate removal method, or purchasing a replacement backing plate from the manufacturer
  • The discussion includes anecdotal solutions but lacks official manufacturer specifications or standardized conversion procedures
  • Cold weather performance and specific voltage requirements for Gold Mount conversion are mentioned but not detailed
  • The thread spans from 2010 to 2012 with varying experience levels and some incomplete information from later posts
