EFP sled with MMX conversion experiencing repeated breaker trips when battery is connected

20 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • A breaker that repeatedly pops when a battery is connected but stays engaged without a battery typically indicates a short circuit in the electrical system
  • To isolate a short circuit, disconnect all cables and test the sled; then reconnect them one at a time to identify which cable causes the breaker to trip
  • If the breaker trips even with all cables removed, the short circuit exists within the base unit itself and requires opening the housing to inspect for worn wire insulation or exposed metal contacts
  • The breaker should never be bypassed as it provides essential protection against shorts that could cause wire melting and create additional electrical damage
  • A temporary workaround while awaiting repair is to replace a faulty breaker with an inline fuse of appropriate amperage rating
  • Common failure points in dual voltage sleds include loose connections on the rear of voltage selector switches, worn centerpost cables, and multipin connections in the upper and lower junction boxes

Depends on

  • The MMX conversion details and its specific wiring configuration are not fully described in the thread
  • The exact cause of the short circuit in the original poster's sled was never confirmed or reported back in the thread
  • The discussion assumes familiarity with the internal structure of EFP sleds and their wiring
  • The recommended replacement breaker model is specific to one brand and may not apply to all EFP variants
