Atlas arm elbow bouncing against lower arm during operation
13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Atlas arm's very low friction elbow can cause lateral bouncing between the upper and lower arm segments, producing taps transmitted to the sled with each step
- The bouncing phenomenon occurs because upper arm inertia carries it away from the operator, then the lower arm catches up when the operator's foot lands
- Sled weight and canister load did not appear to be the cause in this case, as proper tightening for a 39-pound sled with two grey canisters was maintained
- Gimbal hand position and arm opening adjustments proved effective in reducing or eliminating the bouncing issue
- Adding felt padding to existing bumpers reduced the tapping sensation significantly and served as a temporary solution while the operator developed better technique
- The bouncing issue resolved through operator technique and arm positioning rather than hardware modification
Depends on
- This was experienced on one particular Atlas arm setup
- The operator was transitioning from G40 and G50x arms which had more elbow friction
- The solution involved learning proper operation technique rather than indicating a defect
- Bouncing was reportedly observed during running as well, but running is not the normal operating condition
