Choosing between complete Pilot steadicam system versus sled-only with aftermarket arm and vest components

What the thread found

  • The Pilot arm and vest are specifically engineered for the Pilot sled and should not be substituted with third-party alternatives, as the arm post geometry differs from other models like the Merlin and incompatible designs may not fit properly.
  • The Pilot arm is recognized as high-performing for its weight class and price point compared to alternatives like Glidecam systems.
  • The Pilot vest is constructed with plastic components and features velcro fasteners along with buckles; the plastic material was improved by the manufacturer after earlier versions experienced breakage.
  • The Pilot vest remains comfortable during extended use in harsh outdoor conditions and does not create audio interference from velcro.
  • Cheap knockoff arm and vest systems do not meet acceptable quality standards and their arm posts are unlikely to be compatible with the Pilot sled.
  • For video signal transmission from cameras with composite output, the standard Pilot system accepts RCA video input directly to the sled, which connects to the built-in monitor without additional converters.
  • For HD signal sources like HDMI, a converter box such as a DECIMATOR2 or ATOMOS H2S can be mounted on the top stage using velcro to enable SDI or other signal formats.

Depends on

  • Experience described is primarily from documentary work with lightweight cameras, not all shooting scenarios.
  • Discussion references older Pilot models; plastic construction was improved after 2013 but long-term durability of current designs is not extensively documented in thread.
  • Camera-specific signal compatibility advice is limited to GH4 model considerations.
