Powering video downconverters on camera support sleds and choosing between downconverter models
13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Downconverters like the Decimator 2 and AJA HA5 can be powered through a 4-pin Hirose connector on the sled, a P-Tap on the camera, or a 4-pin Hirose connector on compatible Sony and Panasonic broadcast cameras
- Having both a 4-pin Hirose cable and a P-Tap cable provides flexibility for powering downconverters in different shooting scenarios
- Downconverter repair turnaround times can extend beyond two months when parts are unavailable, making it prudent to have backup units or rental options available
- An alternative to downconverters is installing an HD/SDI cable and connector from the top stage to the bottom stage of a master sled with an HD monitor, eliminating the need for downconversion entirely
- The Marshall M70LCD 3G HD monitor performs adequately in most lighting conditions but has limitations in bright sunlight
- Downconverters are increasingly becoming unnecessary as wireless video systems and HD transmission technology advance
Depends on
- The repair turnaround experience described occurred in 2010-2012 and repair processes may have changed since then
- The Marshall M70LCD 3G monitor's performance in direct sunlight is limited
- Alternative solutions like sled-mounted HD monitors require professional installation and infrastructure modifications
- Some participants preferred using older black and white monitoring methods alongside HD downconversion for specific technical reasons
