Adapting camera arms with different post sizes to prevent play and handle torque issues
19 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A crack in an arm collar can suddenly fail under load and pose a safety risk.
- Mismatched arm post diameters between different arm models create excessive play and torque on the gimbal handle and arm connection.
- Gaffer tape alone cannot adequately compensate for diameter differences between arm posts due to the high torque involved.
- An offset bracket with gaffer tape on the smaller post can temporarily secure two different-sized arm posts together for emergency operation.
- Dedicated adapter posts that convert between 5/8 inch (3A and PRO arms) and 3/4 inch (Master arms) are a proper solution for post size mismatches.
- Adapter posts from equipment suppliers like Betz provide solid connection without the play and instability caused by tape or other padding methods.
Depends on
- The offset bracket solution is described as temporary and not equivalent to using a properly matched arm.
- Adapter posts mentioned were formerly manufactured by one supplier but that supplier stopped production.
- The specific availability and current sources for adapter posts may have changed since the 2007 discussion.
