Low mode shooting techniques for Steadicam rigs with HVX and DVX cameras

19 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • Flipping the camera rig upside down is a viable alternative to using a dedicated low mode kit when time is limited
  • When flying upside down, the gimbal must be repositioned and fore-aft balance adjusted to maintain proper operation
  • The monitor can be flipped by removing its mounting screw to facilitate viewing during inverted operation
  • A low mode bracket can remain permanently attached to the camera handle without interfering with normal shooting
  • The resulting inverted footage can be corrected by flipping the image in post-production if the rig itself is not flipped

Depends on

  • Experience reported with DVX100, DVX, M2, and mentioned for HVX200 but not confirmed by original poster
  • Time constraints may make the upside-down method preferable to full re-rigging with a low mode kit
  • The inverted method requires understanding of gimbal balancing adjustments
