Flyer LE produces excessive horizon roll compared to Archer 1, especially with shorter drop times
12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Lighter rigs become more susceptible to operator error and external influences like wind because they have less inertia to stabilize unwanted movements
- Horizon roll problems on a Flyer LE can often be resolved by adjusting drop time from 1.5-2 seconds to around 3 seconds, which reduces pendulum effects
- Static and dynamic balance procedures must be carefully followed on light rigs, including proper gimbal centering, battery positioning, and camera stage placement
- Drop times of 2-2.5 to 3 seconds produce more stable and rock-solid shots on the Flyer LE than shorter drop times
- Keeping a very light grip on the Flyer LE is critical, and raising the elbow excessively causes hand twist that creates horizon problems
- The Flyer LE has a smaller gimbal diameter than larger rigs, which makes it more sensitive to operator technique and balance issues
Depends on
- The original poster was using a PMW-500 camera on the Flyer LE, which represents a substantial load for that rig
- Balance procedures vary depending on monitor weight and battery selection
- Gimbal centering adjustments may require professional assistance
- Results depend heavily on operator experience and technique
