Identifying and adjusting an old Ikegami-based EFP monitor for different aspect ratios

21 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The monitor in question is an Ikegami VF4523 that was modified by replacing the tube with a brighter green tube, adding a circular polarizing filter, and installing a frameline generator.
  • The monitor can be adjusted to 16:9 aspect ratio by adjusting the VR12 potentiometer on the monitor board using a plastic screwdriver to avoid short circuits.
  • Adjustment of the VR12 potentiometer should be performed by filming a test pattern with the camera in 16:9 mode and adjusting the potentiometer until the monitor displays the correct aspect ratio.
  • The frameline feature can be controlled via the center knob on the monitor, and lines may not appear if this control is turned all the way down.
  • A loose internal connector can prevent the frameline feature from displaying, and gently reseating the connector may restore functionality.
  • It is theoretically possible to create a switchable board with two potentiometers to allow quick switching between different aspect ratio settings.

Depends on

  • The monitor does not natively support 16:9 without manual adjustment.
  • The adjustment procedure requires opening the monitor and working with internal components, which may be uncomfortable for those without electronics experience.
  • Original documentation from the equipment manufacturer may be incomplete or difficult to locate for older rigs.
  • The suggestion to create a switchable potentiometer board remains theoretical and untested in the thread.
