Powering a JVC HD110 camera from a Steadicam Flyer sled battery through IDX D-Tap connectors
18 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The Flyer camera stage has a power output connector designed to supply power to mounted cameras, accessible via a 2-pin Lemo to 4-pin XLR cable that typically comes with the Flyer equipment.
- An IDX voltage conversion plate contains internal circuitry for voltage downconversion, making it uncertain whether the plate can receive power through a D-Tap connector as a reverse power input.
- Testing power flow through an IDX conversion plate can be done safely with bare wires connected to the XLR and D-Tap connectors before building a permanent cable, as long as polarity is checked carefully using a battery.
- The Flyer wiring gauge may be insufficient for power-hungry cameras but should work adequately for a JVC HD110, particularly with the voltage step-down from the conversion plate.
- A custom Lemo to D-Tap cable can be made relatively inexpensively by hand or commissioned from cable specialists.
Depends on
- The exact polarity of D-Tap connectors was not confirmed in this discussion.
- Whether the IDX plate can actually function as a reverse power input device remains untested and uncertain.
- The discussion assumes the Flyer can physically support the combined weight of the camera, battery, and accessories, which was questioned but not resolved.
- Wire gauge adequacy was stated without specific amperage calculations for the JVC HD110's power requirements.
