History and development of dynamic balance in Steadicam rigs
13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Dynamic balance issues first became apparent in the mid-1980s when operators noticed that some rigs would tilt up or down during fast pans, a phenomenon called precessing, with The Shining film serving as a testing ground for addressing these problems.
- In January 1988, two operators independently discovered that when a monitor is raised on a Steadicam rig, the camera center of gravity is not centered over the center post but slightly behind it, requiring a different balancing approach.
- Mathematical formulas for dynamic balance were developed to replace intuition-based balancing methods, with one operator's brother providing the scientific framework that was published in the Steadicam Letter.
- The original Steadicam EFP model could not be put into dynamic balance, but the earlier Steadicam JR model did account for it, and later EFP versions were modified to support dynamic balance.
- Operators developed various modifications to achieve dynamic balance on EFP rigs, including adjustable weighted elements positioned at the rear of the battery assembly.
- Early Steadicam models featured cables running from the stage directly to the sled, while later designs routed all cabling through the center post to allow the rig to spin freely around the pan axis.
Depends on
- The discussion relies on recollections from operators rather than documented historical records.
- One participant's characterization of dynamic balance development as having NASA involvement was not supported by those with direct knowledge.
- The exact timeline of when dynamic balance concepts were first attempted is unclear, with references to experimentation in the late 1980s but no precise dates confirmed.
- One contributor could not attend regularly to clarify details about specific technical implementations.
