Camera payload specifications and setup limits for the Steadicam® Axis; comparison with Sony and ARRI cameras.
What the thread found
- The Steadicam® Axis has an official payload capacity of 9 kg (20 lb).
- Practical testing shows payloads approaching the limit: one operator used a Sony Burano with Teradek wireless, small prime lens, 90 Wh battery, focus motor and small matte box—indicating that ALEXA Mini class cameras with compact batteries and small primes are the design target, not large zoom lenses.
- Additional operators reported successful flights with Sony Venice 1 (approximately 7.5 kg) and ARRI ALEXA LF (approximately 8.5 kg), both intentionally kept below 9 kg maximum.
- A stronger arm such as the Steadicam® G-50 does not increase the payload limit; according to maker information, the constraint originates from the integrated Volt electronics, and a stronger arm only invites overloading.
- Low Mode operation on the Axis is more restricted than on heavier rigs, while the new Volt electronics offer significantly more presets and adjustments compared to the first generation.
Depends on
- Camera class and battery size (compact vs. standard)
- Lens type and accessory weight (small primes vs. zoom lenses)
- Arm choice does not overcome the electronic payload limit
