Tiffen Volt losing horizon lock in Sticky Mode with motor vibration—systematic fault-finding.
What the thread found
- Loose drive belts are the primary cause: tension the belts via the hex screws at both motor ends, but do not over-tighten; belt flutter disappears after proper tensioning.
- Check that the encoder cable wound around the gimbal post is fully seated at the gimbal connector end; LED indicators may show activity regardless.
- Low supply voltage to the sled can produce similar symptoms of horizon drift and motor noise.
- Allow a minimum settling time of approximately ten seconds after power-up so the electronics can establish orientation; premature operation causes instability.
- Reduce motor strength setting if it is excessive for the payload, which causes vibration and pendulation; verify encoder cables and consult manufacturer FAQ.
- One operator reported residual pendulation at maximum tilt and unstable balance tracking that persisted after adjustment.
Depends on
- Symptoms depend on supply voltage stability at the sled
- Motor strength calibration depends on total camera payload
- Balance and tilt range affect motor resonance
