Compatibility issues between a Hill Garfield vehicle mount and a Matthews MSE 815510 Mitchell plate
17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A Hill Garfield vehicle mount with a 7-inch diameter base did not fit securely on a Matthews MSE 815510 Mitchell plate with a 6.5-inch diameter, causing the retaining pin to slip out of the keyway when the mount shifted off-center.
- Standard Mitchell bases should measure between 7 and 7.25 inches in diameter; the MSE unit at 6.5 inches is undersized for proper compatibility.
- Vehicle mounts from Hill, Cinema Products, and other manufacturers are designed to work interchangeably with any properly sized Mitchell-mounted base or dolly.
- Possible solutions include repositioning the retaining key closer to the center of the mount, or fabricating a new washer assembly with a stepped center disk that prevents lateral movement.
Depends on
- The MSE product appears to be a dolly riser rather than a traditional hi-hat, which may explain the incompatibility.
- The specific Hill mount model may differ from current production versions, having been manufactured by Cinema Products or another distributor before Hill's current design.
- No definitive confirmation that a correctly-sized Mitchell plate from another manufacturer would resolve the issue.
- The discussion does not establish whether the problem is inherent to the MSE design or a manufacturing defect.
