Gimbal balance problem where rig loses balance when rotated despite correct static balance setup
17 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A stabilizer can show proper static balance in one orientation but fail to balance when rotated 90 degrees, with the camera tilting or pointing incorrectly in other angles.
- This multi-axis balance issue may indicate gimbal misalignment rather than camera weight distribution problems.
- The manufacturer can adjust gimbal balance by repositioning shims or adjusting special screws on the gimbal sides, typically completed within 30 minutes.
- Dynamic balance may appear acceptable while rotating, but balance errors become apparent when the rig stops moving.
Depends on
- This issue was reported on a Pilot stabilizer in 2009; applicability to other models or eras is unclear.
- The user had previously used a Glidecam and was familiar with balance procedures, but the specific root cause of the gimbal issue was not explained in detail.
- Self-repair options were mentioned as possible but not documented; manufacturer support was recommended instead.
