Adding weight and balance to a DVX100 camera for use on a Steadicam SK2

What the thread found

  • A camera cage or weighted steel plate can be added to increase total weight for better Steadicam performance.
  • Weight distribution matters more than total weight alone; positioning additional weight higher than the gimbal stage level allows the gimbal to stay closer to the post rather than extending downward, which improves stability.
  • A geared focus ring can be fitted to the fixed lens to enable use with a focus motor.
  • The P+S Technik Mini35 adapter system uses a relay lens with internal spinning groundglass to mount 35mm PL lenses, achieving the field of view and depth of field of 35mm cinema photography while the camera's native lens rephotographs the groundglass image.
  • A custom steel weight plate of 15 pounds can be combined with a quick-release tripod slider for repeatable balance without readjusting after removing and reattaching the camera.
  • An Anton Bauer Goldmount battery adapter with internal downconverter adds approximately 2 pounds of weight while powering the camera for extended periods.
  • Aftermarket focus gears are available from multiple manufacturers, with options providing physical stops on the lens barrel.

Depends on

  • The DVX100 has a fixed Leica lens that cannot be changed; only wide-angle adapters or the external lens relay system can modify the optical characteristics.
  • The P+S Technik adapter system costs significantly more than the camera itself.
  • Weight and balance configurations are specific to individual setups and may require recalibration for different accessories.
  • Temperature changes have been reported as potentially problematic with some configurations.
