Eliminating squeaking noise from a Steadicam® PRO vest, especially during extended-arm push-in moves.

What the thread found

  • Padding rubbing against the metal of the chest plate is a common source; taping contact points with fabric tape eliminated the noise for one operator.
  • The connection of the front arm to the socket block receptacle can produce squeaking; disassembly, cleaning, and application of a thin grease film resolved the issue for another operator.
  • Straps rubbing on underlying materials may also cause squeaking.
  • Broken plastic inserts should be inspected and replaced.
  • Steadicam® published a maintenance video for the PRO vest recommending lithium grease between components to reduce noise.
  • Noise control is critical for location sound recording; simply greasing the screws alone may not resolve all squeaking sources.

Depends on

  • Noise sources vary depending on individual rig configuration and wear patterns.
  • Effectiveness of lubrication depends on grease type and application thickness.
