Eliminating play in a Tiffen M1 gimbal retrofitted with Volt electronics on-set without full disassembly.

What the thread found

  • Play in the M1 gimbal is typically caused by a loosened upper bearing ring, which can be tightened without disassembling the gimbal.
  • On Volt-equipped gimbals, an encoder/sensor ring sits at the top, adhered with tape; it must be carefully lifted—for example with a razor blade—without destroying the adhesive layer, then tightened using the matching spanner wrench.
  • In one instance, tightening the ring from the top of the gimbal eliminated the play, after which verification in Low Mode was recommended.
  • If the ring is not re-tightened, play returns.
  • The gimbal manufacturer provides an instructional video and offers direct technical support for this procedure.
