Using RED cameras with AR (aerial rig) stabilizers and monitoring setup
19 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- RED cameras initially output either the on-camera monitor or HD-SDI signal, but not both simultaneously, requiring workarounds for transmitting to video village during production.
- Downconversion to NTSC can enable signal splitting by routing through an external monitor with SDI loop-out capability, allowing simultaneous monitoring and transmission.
- RED cameras mounted in AR rigs tend to be bottom-heavy, which can be addressed by adding weight to the camera top or inserting spacers between the camera and rig side plate to center the weight distribution.
- When using RED in an AR rig, removing non-essential components from the camera body helps optimize the setup.
Depends on
- Information based on RED camera models from 2007 that may have been updated in firmware since this discussion.
- The downconversion solution assumes availability of monitoring equipment with SDI loop-out capability.
- Weight balancing solutions were not fully tested due to time constraints during the original shoot.
