Adding HD-SDI video output to a Master Series Film Steadicam

12 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • An RG179 75 ohm coaxial cable can be routed alongside the existing wire bundle from the top stage to the K-section to carry HD-SDI video signal.
  • The cable can terminate at an available SD-BNC connector or a new female chassis BNC connector installed in the existing opening.
  • The onboard digital level and frame line electronics do not process the HD signal, as it runs directly from the input connector to the output connector, so those functions will not work with HD feeds.
  • External HD-compatible bubble levels can be added depending on the monitor type, and many LCD monitors offer built-in frame line software as an alternative.
  • Access to the internal electronics requires unplugging all cables carefully, though work can often be limited to one side of the equipment.

Depends on

  • The built-in frame line and digital level features of the original equipment are not compatible with HD and will not display on HD monitors.
  • The procedure involves opening and working with internal electronics, so users uncomfortable with this should seek professional service.
  • This appears to be a user-implemented workaround rather than an officially supported upgrade path.
