Operating an Alexa mini camera system on a DJI Pilot drone
What the thread found
- An Alexa mini with focus motor, SDI to analog converter, audio receiver, Marshall monitor, and battery can be mounted on a Pilot drone but the weight causes arm drooping and operator fatigue.
- The Pilot's power wiring cannot safely supply power to an Alexa mini, requiring an external D-tap extension from the battery to a splitter on the top stage instead.
- Reducing total rig weight by less than one kilogram would significantly improve flight performance and operator comfort.
- Using Cooke S4 mini lenses, particularly the lighter 18mm, helps minimize payload weight.
- A custom 3D-printed grip addon designed for the Pilot gimbal improves handling characteristics.
- Bungee cord wrapping around the arm can help support the drooping issue.
Depends on
- The reported flight was functional but not ideal and caused operator strain.
- Success depends on precise weight management and may not be practical for routine operations.
- The custom grip addon is produced by a specific third party and availability is unclear.
- Only one attempted flight was documented.
