Evaluating an unlicensed stabilizer clone found as scrap; suitability for a Canon 5D Mark III and missing parts.

What the thread found

  • Several experienced operators concluded that the set contains no genuine Steadicam® components, but is instead a clone bearing the Steadicam® name without license, similar to CAME-TV or Proaim models.
  • The rig has low payload capacity and internal cabling suited to analog or SD video (50 ohm), with no broadcast-standard battery plate, making it non-standardized and incompatible with aftermarket parts.
  • The second stabilizing fin under the sled is missing, as is the dock (a fixture that mounts to a C-stand or lamp stand and holds the sled for mounting and balancing).
  • Despite its limitations, the rig has sufficient capacity to carry a Canon 5D Mark III.
  • Resale value is low due to its non-standard design.
  • One operator offered local hands-on instruction; online video tutorials on stabilizer operation were suggested as an entry point.

Depends on

  • Payload rating of the rig.
  • Camera weight and balance requirements.
  • Compatibility of available replacement docks and sleds.
  • Quality and condition of internal cabling.
