SK2 monitor dropout issue caused by internal component contact with housing

21 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • A transistor with an aluminum heat sink mounted in the center of the SK2 monitor can make contact with the interior of the housing cover, particularly after prolonged operation when heat causes expansion, which disables the monitor display.
  • Tapping the top of the SK2 case can temporarily restore the monitor to working condition by breaking the unwanted contact between the heat sink and housing.
  • The issue can be resolved by slightly repositioning the transistor heat sink downward to create sufficient clearance so it will not make contact with the cover.
  • The SK2 monitor housing design may have inadequate internal clearance between components and the cover, suggesting a potential manufacturing or design issue that Tiffen was reportedly unaware of.

Depends on

  • The dropout behavior appears to worsen with monitor runtime, suggesting thermal expansion is involved but this relationship was not definitively established.
  • The exact conditions that trigger the contact and the specific thermal threshold were not clearly documented.
  • No confirmation was provided that Tiffen ultimately addressed or acknowledged this as a design flaw.
  • The repair procedure requires opening the housing with specialized screwdrivers and adjusting internal components, which may void warranty or cause damage if done incorrectly.
