Lithium ion battery transport restrictions for air travel effective January 2008

19 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • Lithium ion batteries exceeding 8 grams of aggregate lithium content cannot be carried onto aircraft.
  • Two lithium ion batteries with individual mass below 8 grams each and combined mass under 25 grams may be carried if terminals are insulated or contacts are taped to prevent short circuits.
  • No lithium ion batteries of any capacity are permitted in aircraft cargo holds.
  • These restrictions apply to all battery types including those for mobile phones, computers, cameras, and stabilization equipment.
  • Spare batteries must be shipped separately to travel destinations rather than transported by air.

Depends on

  • Rules took effect January 1, 2008 and were current at time of posting in 2007.
  • The post mentions additional restrictions coming in October 2008 but does not detail them.
  • Specific threshold of 95 wh is mentioned as approximate guidance for the 8 gram limit but exact conversion was not universal.
  • Discussion participants acknowledge practical difficulties but do not resolve how restrictions would be managed operationally.
