Controlling roll axis on M15 movie controller gimbal and using mimic mode

What the thread found

  • The zoom rocker on the controller side can be assigned to control roll through TX Config and Map Roll input menu.
  • Roll control via knob or zoom rocker is limited to approximately 25 degrees from level.
  • Mimic mode enables roll control up to 90 degrees or potentially more by placing the controller on a fluid head at 90 degrees to its normal orientation.
  • Mimic mode can be configured by downloading it from Freefly website and installing on both the M15 and controller with no additional hardware required.
  • When using mimic mode for extended roll range, pan and tilt scaling should be reduced to zero to allow remote wheels or joystick control while maintaining roll capability.
  • In extended roll configurations, the MoVI Ring must be rolled along with the camera to avoid gimbal lock, which occurs when the gimbal exceeds approximately 25 degrees from the ring's orientation.

Depends on

  • Discussion is specific to M15 gimbal and Freefly movie controller system from 2017.
  • Extended roll technique using fluid head requires coordination and communication between operator and camera operator.
  • Mimic mode availability depends on when the controller was purchased; older units may require downloading the feature.
  • Gimbal lock becomes a problem when roll exceeds the ring's orientation threshold in extended roll setups.
