Changing battery systems on a used Steadicam Master Series Film rig

20 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The Master Series Film originally used CP Steadicam batteries but can be retrofitted with alternative systems like Anton Bauer or PAG batteries.
  • Anton Bauer Hydron 120 batteries can power a Master Series rig with Digibeta, two-channel radio focus, and microwave equipment for approximately two hours of intensive use.
  • Switching battery systems on a Master Series requires creating mounting holes, connecting red and black power cables, welding, and insulation work.
  • Different regions favor different battery standards, with Anton Bauer more common in some areas and PAG or V-mount more prevalent in others.
  • The PAG socket is physically larger than the Anton Bauer connector, and retrofitting to PAG may require removing the battery meter from the sled back.

Depends on

  • The Anton Bauer experience was reported with Digibeta equipment, not film work, so performance with film cameras was not confirmed.
  • No dedicated Anton Bauer bracket specifically designed for the Master Series Film was confirmed to exist.
  • The PAG modification was performed by someone without formal electronics training, and detailed installation procedures were not fully provided in the thread.
  • Battery compatibility options beyond Anton Bauer and PAG were not thoroughly explored.
