Stabilizer balancing problems and stability issues on first steadicam shoot

19 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • A post that appears perfectly straight when stationary but gradually rotates on its horizontal axis after a few seconds indicates a balancing problem.
  • Horizontal camera shake during movement can result from improper balance on the rig.
  • Adding counterweight to only one edge of the post bottom while placing multiple weight plates on top can create balance, especially when a monitor on the opposite side provides additional counterbalance.
  • Lengthening the post increases stability but severely limits vertical movement capability.
  • In-person guidance from an experienced operator is more practical than studying complex mathematical balancing theory for beginners.
  • A workshop with hands-on instruction is recommended as the most effective way to learn proper technique, though this may not be available in all regions.

Depends on

  • The operator was new to steadicam work and may have been making technique errors during operation.
  • Camera body was a specific model (JVC GY-HD 100) which may have affected balance characteristics.
  • The rig used was lightweight with minimal inertia, which compounds balancing challenges.
  • No conclusion was reached about whether the observed problems were equipment-related or operator-related.
