Panavision F23 camera setup for handheld and Steadicam work with two-piece recording configuration
18 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- The F23 can operate in two-piece mode without inherent technical problems when camera and recorder are in the correct operating modes
- Up to 100 feet of standard coax cable can be used for two-piece F23 recording
- Two-piece mode on F23 supports only fixed frame rates of 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, and 59.97 fps; variable speed work requires one-piece operation
- Fiber optic conversion systems like the Telecast Rattler introduce approximately one frame of audio delay and require two transmitter-receiver pairs for dual-link operation
- The F23 power connector is mechanically similar to Genesis but exits the camera body at a different angle (22.5 degrees instead of side-mounted)
- To record over 30 fps in 4:4:4 chroma subsampling on the SRW-1 recorder, the HKSR103 board must be installed; over 30 fps without this board is limited to 4:2:2
- Back-mounted batteries work for handheld two-piece operation; Steadicam sleds can power the F23 via Y-connector cables
Depends on
- Reports about F23 versus Genesis power cable compatibility were conflicting in the source community
- Fiber optic systems were cost-prohibitive for this production at around 800 dollars per day
- The HKSR103 board for high frame rate 4:4:4 recording was rare and expensive
- Audio delay from fiber systems requires sound department awareness and potential delay compensation equipment
