PRO sled with XCS post conversion exhibits orbital drift during drop test despite static balance
13 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A PRO rig balanced statically can develop sideways oscillation during dynamic drop tests when converted to an XCS post, even though the gimbal tests fine when spinning.
- Misalignment between the PRO top stage and XCS post connection can cause the rig to fall in arcs rather than straight lines, resulting from unequal heights among the three positioning pins.
- Wrapping the threaded connection between the PRO body and XCS post with plumber's PTFE tape and tightening the ring while rocking the top stage fore and aft can eliminate the play and restore balanced drop behavior.
- The XCS gimbal is highly sensitive to mechanical tolerances and minor misalignments that would not affect other sled models.
- Repeated docking and undocking with certain accessories can gradually reintroduce play in the connection and cause the drift problem to return.
Depends on
- The solution described involves mixing components from two different manufacturers, so it may not apply to all-PRO or all-XCS builds.
- The underlying cause may differ between individual rigs depending on manufacturing tolerances and which components are mixed.
- Some participants left this as an unresolved issue requiring engineering attention rather than a confirmed permanent fix.
- Using additional accessories on the post during operation may cause the problem to recur despite initial correction.
