Gloves and hand warming techniques for operating camera equipment in cold weather
14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- Touchscreen-compatible gloves allow operation without removing gloves, but most models have temperature limits around 14 degrees Fahrenheit or -10 Celsius
- Placing a hand or toe warmer in a wristband under the palm can warm blood flow to fingers and enable extended gloveless operation in very cold conditions
- Wrapping gimbal handles or posts with foam adhesive grip material reduces heat loss from bare metal contacting exposed skin
- Fingerless or convertible gloves that allow finger coverage when idle and exposure when actively operating provide flexibility for extended shoots
- Thin insulated gloves work adequately for moderately cold conditions as a fallback option
Depends on
- Most commercially available cold-weather touchscreen gloves lose functionality below approximately 14 degrees Fahrenheit
- The hand warmer technique was reported from winter shooting in Michigan but effectiveness may vary by individual and exact conditions
- No systematic comparison was provided between different glove models or techniques
- Discussion predates modern heated glove technology
