Using a ball head as a stage pan-tilt mechanism
14 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.
What the thread found
- A ball head on a stage would create instability and raise the center of gravity excessively, making it impractical except for the lightest cameras.
- Tightening a ball head with a wrench might improve stability but standard tripod heads are heavier and raise the center of gravity even more.
- Trimming the rig for headroom by accepting slight tilt during shots is often better than maintaining perfect balance while applying continuous force to the mechanism.
- Static balance has no fixed position and can be adjusted per shot based on operator preference and shot requirements.
- Dynamic balance specifically requires the post to remain vertical.
- Some operators with motorized stages program multiple static balance points to switch between different configurations during a single take.
Depends on
- The recommendation against ball heads applies primarily to dynamic balance scenarios.
- The suggestion to trim for headroom assumes the operator is comfortable with non-vertical post positioning.
- Multi-point static balance programming applies only to motorized stage systems.
- No specific stage model or camera weight specifications were tested.
