Balancing a Steadicam® sled: docking mount versus C-stand, and gimbal centering checks.
What the thread found
- A docking mount with pin allows full 360-degree rotation of the sled for balance verification; a C-stand permits only tilt balance and introduces different mechanical tolerances if the lamp post is worn.
- When balance differs between the docking pin and the vest, this indicates an off-center gimbal, often revealed by differences in grip position relative to the gimbal; a well-centered rig should balance identically on both.
- The 180-degree test confirms centering: balance the sled, rotate it 180 degrees, release it gently, and observe if it swings out of balance—if it does, the bearing or gimbal centering is misaligned.
- For practical operating, balance on the vest is the operative reference; alternatively, adjust the socket block so that the sled hangs the same way at the stand as it will on the body.
Depends on
- Depends on gimbal centering and bearing condition; worn components change mechanical behavior.
