Installing a VZ gimbal onto a post encounters resistance from the top insert

20 years old. Gear and prices may have changed since.

What the thread found

  • The top insert of the gimbal has an adjustment mechanism with four slots that must be backed off to allow the gimbal to slide onto the post
  • After positioning the gimbal on the post, the slotted adjustment ring should be snugged down, and the gimbal should be slid into final position before fully tightening because a taper in the mechanism locks the insert to the post
  • If the plastic insert shifts downward during installation, a small screwdriver can be used to hold it in place at the top while sliding the assembly onto the post

Depends on

  • The advice was given in 2006 and applies specifically to the VZ gimbal upgrade
  • The exact mechanism details depend on the specific gimbal model and design
  • No confirmation whether the taper mechanism and plastic insert behavior applies universally to all gimbal variants
